Wood & cedar

Wood & CedarFence Installation

Cedar and pressure-treated wood privacy, horizontal and picket fences built by in-house crews since 1986. Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, DC and Maryland.

What we provide

Wood & Cedar Fence Installation

Wood is still the fence most DMV homeowners choose, and it is the one Expert Fence has built the longest. Since 1986 our own crews have installed cedar and pressure-treated fences across Washington DC, Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland, from small Old Town back yards to long rural boundary runs.

We stock the material ourselves at our Alexandria yard (cedar, Japanese cedar, clear cedar and pressure-treated pine posts, pickets, rails and panels), so we control the grade of lumber that goes into your fence instead of taking whatever a supplier has that week.

Options

What We Build

Every option is priced on the same written estimate, so you can compare real numbers for your property.

Wood Privacy

Most popular

Full-height board fence that closes the yard off completely. Cedar or pressure-treated, 6 ft standard and 8 ft where code allows.

  • Total privacy and wind break
  • Board-on-board, shadowbox or solid styles
  • Lattice or decorative tops available
  • Stain any colour you like

Horizontal Cedar

Modern homes

Boards run horizontally for a clean contemporary line. A premium build that needs more posts and tighter tolerances than a standard fence.

  • Clean modern appearance
  • Pairs with flat-top posts and metal accents
  • Best on level or gently sloped runs
  • Higher material and labour cost

Picket & Estate

Front yards

Traditional spaced picket at 3–4 ft that defines the property and contains pets without walling off the front of the house.

  • Gothic, French or flat tops
  • HOA-friendly heights
  • Historic profiles matched around Old Town
  • Matching walk gates

Ranch & Split Rail

Large lots

Two-, three- and four-rail wood fencing for boundaries, paddocks and acreage where you want to mark the line rather than hide it.

  • Economical over long runs
  • Wire mesh can be added for pets
  • Follows rolling ground
  • Low visual impact

Where we work

Serving DC, Maryland & Virginia

Wood fences need different footings and finishes depending on where they are built: heavy clay in Fairfax and Prince William counties, tight lot lines and historic-district review in Old Town Alexandria and parts of DC, and HOA design rules across Loudoun, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Our crews work in all of them every week.

Our yard and fabrication shop are at 6027 Farrington Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304. If your property is inside the Beltway or within about an hour of it, we serve it. Not sure? Call (703) 751-3008.

Common questions

Wood & Cedar Fences FAQ

Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, stays straighter and takes stain beautifully, so it is the better choice for visible privacy fences. Pressure-treated pine costs less and is very strong, which makes it a good choice for posts and for long utility runs. Many of our fences use pressure-treated posts with cedar boards; we will price both options on the same estimate.

In this climate a well-built cedar fence typically lasts 15–25 years. What shortens its life is water: posts set without proper drainage, soil or mulch piled against the boards, and finishes that are never renewed. We build to avoid the first two and give you a care schedule for the third.

Let new cedar or pressure-treated wood weather three to six months before the first coat, so the mill glaze and moisture can leave the boards. After that, plan to clean and re-seal every two to three years. We offer staining and sealing as a separate service.

Usually yes, or HOA approval, or both. Most DMV jurisdictions require a permit for fences over 4 ft in a front yard or over 6–7 ft anywhere. We prepare and submit the paperwork as part of the job.

Often, yes. We keep common profiles in stock and can mill or fabricate to match older runs, including historic picket and cap profiles. Bring a photo and a measurement to the estimate.
